The Legend ‘Masaba’

Masaba was born and raised in the beautiful Mount Elgon region of Eastern Uganda, where traditional African wisdom has been passed from one generation to another.

As a young boy, elders recognized his extraordinary intuition and spiritual awareness. Guided by respected traditional custodians, he dedicated many years to learning ancestral wisdom, dream interpretation, blessing ceremonies, spiritual counselling, and traditional African practices.

Origins and Ancestry

  • First Settlers: Oral tradition says their earliest ancestors emerged from or settled around a cave on Mount Elgon, which locals historically called Mount Masaba.
  • The Mountain Cradle: The high caves and slopes of the mountain served as a vital sanctuary and the cradle of their civilization.
  • Clans: Descendants of Masaba (such as Mwambu, Mubuuya, and Wanale) are believed to have founded the major traditional clans

Cultural Beliefs and Traditions

Legend says the famous Imbalu male circumcision rite began when Masaba married a Mutwa (Maasai) woman named Nabarwa, whose family required him to be circumcised first.

Circumcision is believed to be essential for a boy to transition into a respected man and gain marriage eligibility. Showing fear during the public ceremony brings shame to the initiate’s family

Local tradition places high value on malewa (smoked bamboo shoots gathered from the mountain) as a sacred and historical staple food used during rituals and major celebrations
